Today I did a series of figure drawing starts.
It has become increasingly apparent to me that a good start will determine the rest of the drawing or painting. If you have a bad start where all the proportions are incorrect then the rest of the drawing is just painful. Most accomplished artists I see always have a solid beginning making the rest of the painting or drawing a breeze to complete. So I’m practicing my starts.
I’m trying to keep my lines accurate yet at the same time I’m trying to keep the gesture of the pose. I keep looking for the big shapes and the action lines throughout the figure. Whenever I feel that I’m focusing too much on small details I stop, take a breath, and try and see the big shapes.
