Fundamentals: Gestures In Oil

I finally got a canvas prepared to start doing some gestures in oil.

For these drawings I used a Draw This video on Youtube and paused each pose for 5 minutes, painted the gesture, then wiped the canvas down. The photos aren’t the best because I was using my phone but for these quick drawings they don’t have to be professional.

Painting gestures is almost completely different than drawing gestures. I almost exclusively use straight lines and I definitely didn’t have as much control with the brush as I do with a charcoal stick or pencil. This is great training though as I need to practice control with the brush.

I’m not sure how many more I can do of these, the canvas collects a little more paint every gesture so if I do too much it will turn into a burnt umber canvas.

  1. I like these. It’s very different from the charcoal drawings, but I can see the practice from the poses pays off.
