Fundamentals: Okay With the Minimum

Today was one of those days when work went very long and I didn’t have a lot of time for art.

The important thing is that I do something daily. A daily habit will always lead to longer hours and constantly keep my practice part of my life. Today I did the minimum of 30 minutes of drawing, it’s all I had time for and I’m okay with that, because I know that I can make up more time throughout the week.

One piece of advice I an give to help with a daily habit is to always have your materials ready to draw or paint at a moments notice. If you have to spend 20 minutes just getting setup it is very discouraging for the craft. My drawing board is always ready and stacked with paper and I have my box of charcoal at hand. It only takes me about a minute to grab my board, charcoal and drink before I’m ready to draw. When I want to paint it is the same way, I have my materials at hand and it only takes about 5 minutes for me to get my palette and easel setup.

Also, don’t worry about making a masterpiece every time you start drawing or painting. Do it for the pleasure of doing it and if you make something great then that is the icing on the cake. The most important thing is to just do it, daily.
