In the Zone

I may have not produced some of the best looking drawings but I was having fun and I was in the zone for this session.

There seemed to be just the right mix of music in my headphone and focus on the drawing that I was able to just lose myself in the act. I have to admit that these occasions are rare but quite invigorating.

At the beginning I started out the first 1 and 2 minute poses with the regular “flowy” type gesture lines then went into a style that I’m beginning to find really works well with my brain. Maybe I’m avoiding the essence of gesture but honestly this way just feels right to me.

It seems to me that this scratchy way of doing quick drawings is closer to what you would see in old master drawings.

This first 5 minute drawing (the one on top) worked really well. The line variation, proportions and gesture are all there.

Okay, some of the drawings don’t go as well as others, especially the shorter ones. Trying to hit the details quickly with a one minute sketch leads to quite a lot of errors.

  1. I think your sketches are amazing. I like that you get “lost” in doing these. You’re enjoying your work and producing beautiful work at the same time.
