I find myself struggling a bit this session with the balance between focus and energy while drawing.
When I’m drawing these short poses I want energy within the drawings. I want to be passionate with my mark making but like most things there is a balance. Without focus there is no control and the passion will run away with my charcoal and loose all since of the proportion.
I’m still trying to figure out how to indicate shadowed areas well. If I block in the entire area with charcoal for some reason it doesn’t look right. And if I quickly indicate with lines it retains some energy but then gets quite flat. Although I do think that a combination of lines that move with the form and against the form work the best. I’m reminded of drawing by Nicolai Fechin, the shadows in his drawing are barely indicated and it works really well.
