Session #011, Work #010

Overview

20513-setup

I finished up the painting from yesterday of the dolphins while looking at the last post I made about it with the Photoshop filter giving me an idea of how to simplify the wood block better. It worked out really well. I must say that painting on these boards with a good layer of paint covering up their slick surface is great. So good that the next two panels already have a coat of oil paint on them, drying and waiting for me.

The dolphin rework didn’t take very long so I decided I was going to have some fun. I plopped an apple down in the spot that the dolphins were and began to paint quickly and without much concern for anything. I was informed by the apple, its shape, color and value but if what I was painting was a bit off I didn’t really care. I stuck to big strokes and tried to describe as much as possible with each stroke. It was a lot of fun and the painting turned out pretty good.

My hierarchy of painting importance

  1. Drawing
  2. Value
  3. Edges
  4. Composition
  5. Color

Drawing

20513-drawing

How can I improve the drawing

I didn’t change much on the drawing here from the last painting. I knew it was off and I was ok by that. Incidentally when I was looking back at my last photograph of the dolphin statue I noticed that it was at a different angle than what I was observing from my chair.  This was partly why I didn’t worry about the drawing. My main focus here was to get that darn wood block looking good by learning how to generalize it in paint. I was really happy with the result, and my previous Photoshop filter really got me looking at the big shapes and not getting so caught up in the small transitions.

How can I improve the drawing

Now I did this painting pretty quickly, I would guess 30 minutes or less. I wasn’t focusing on drawing that much but WOW, look at those angles I got them perfect. I’m really happy about that. Even the apple itself is not that far off from the original, and the shadow is pretty close also. Overall I’m really happy with the drawing here. Of course this is a very simple subject I’m not sure if the subject was more complex that the quick uncaring drawing would be anywhere near this close.

Value

How can I improve the values?

I’m really happy with these values. Although I don’t really like how I matched them up for comparison this time, I was just having some fun in Photoshop.

How can I improve the values?

Values are really nice here. Nothing much to say, a quick, easy, painting and I nailed it well.

Edges

Not much focus on edges again.

Composition

I kept the composition simple and didn’t focus on it at all. The only thing I wanted to do was keep the entire figure in the painting.

Color

Not much of a focus on color here. I just recognized which areas were warm and which were cool and tried to keep them somewhat true.
