Session #055, Work #041

For this painting I went to Richmond Beach park just north of Seattle, I think it is in Shoreline. I was planning on painting the coast, so I setup on one of the highest points of this park. The park was built basically on the side of a sloping cliff so it has a lot of elevation changes. But, there was still a level higher than where I was and I happened to look up and see this awesome grouping of trees surrounded by a clear blue sky. So I turned my back on the coast and was very happy for doing so. I really enjoyed this painting, even when I was being watched by a family of nice people, even after a bird decided to relieve itself on my head. 🙁

The main thing that I take away from this painting that I need to work on, is generalizing a mass of random shapes/fluff into something structural and resembling the subject. You can see the issue in this painting with the mass of tall grass at the bottom right.

My hierarchy of painting importance

  1. Drawing
  2. Value
  3. Edges
  4. Composition
  5. Color

Drawing

I didn’t feel a need to do a drawing comparison. There are obvious problems with the drawing.

Value

How can I improve the values?

Overall the values are darker in the painting then they should be. I’m not sure how to fix this, the painting looks good. I guess I need to get used to painting quickly on location.
