Session #422, Work #402

This may be the best painting I have done in a long time. I cranked this thing out in about 30 minutes, but for some reason I love it.

Painting class tonight was very thought provoking with all the questions that Jamie posed to me about my work and ultimate subject. I will attempt to write them here for posterity. This is something I will be focusing on for a while.

  • What process will help specify my next set of practical working subjects?
  • What do I need to work on technically?
  • What do I need to know about materials?
  • What am I fascinated about?

What process will help specify my next set of practical working subjects?

This question is all about determining a direction. I mean, I really have no idea where I’m going in this art bus, but I have to go somewhere so I might as well set a direction based on something I know now.

I have a feeling that my direction will be moving towards heavy contrast painting with less emphasis on color and focus on value.

What do I need to work on technically?

The first thought here, given to me by Jamie, is perspective. He is going to be giving me a worksheet on the subject. But I also must include drawing, value and composition in there, it may go without saying that these thing we as artists work on all our life.

What do I need to know about materials?

I’m not sure here. I’m always trying something new with my materials and trying to discover better ways of doing things. Lately I have had some experience with or primed canvas with mixed reviews but I know it has really good merits so I must persist in trying to get it right.

What am I fascinated about?

I have no idea… just yet, still working on it.
