100 Years in Weeks

I’ve had on my to do list for a while now and exercise from Optimize.me, called “100 Years in Weeks”. Today I took the time to complete it and get more perspective on my life.

100 years in weeks

The grid on this sheet is 52 columns wide and 100 rows long. The columns represent the number of weeks in a year and each row represents a year. The highlighted area in green is the amount of life I’ve lived, 45 years.

The purpose of this exercise is to bring some visceral awareness to the preciousness of each day of our lives.

I strive to be better than average but the average life span for men is around 80. I’m hoping to live past 100, that is why the grid is so long. But I don’t know how long I’m going to live and each week when I fill in a new block its going to be a wonderful reminder of the inevitability of death.

I have only so much time to love those closest to me, to accomplish my dreams and to experience this wonderful existence. I’m trying not to waste a minute of it!

The day after this post Ryan Holiday posted “How to Have the Best Week Ever”.

Taking a day “off”

I’m not sure why but my motivation was waning today. I’ve become very sensitive to my moods before I start my art because it effects my performance. Today I decided to listen, take it easy, and only work for 2 hours.

When I’m between projects this tends to happen. But I do fear that it could be burn-out from all the time I put in last month.

I’m still super proud of the 2 hours though. I remember months ago when getting 30 minutes done a day was difficult.

Warm-up and DrawABox exercises

My had was much more shaky this morning, I’m not sure if you can tell.

Daily Composition and Daily Sketch

I didn’t come in contact yesterday with more than a couple people off in the distance and I couldn’t com up with any composition so I drew my kiddie.

What went well?

I was able to get some art done today! Plus the 100 years in weeks exercise is posted right next to my desk to help me remember the preciousness of each moment.

What needs work?

Add in more meditation throughout my day.

What did I learn?

Highlighting 45 rows of data can be very meditative when you try to keep the highlighter between the lines and go slow.

  1. Think back to a few years ago when an off day would typically mean the bare minimum of 1/2 hour. Today was an off day and you did 2 hours…
