I’m happy to say that I’ve had a morning full of art and creativity and it is so exhilarating after the last two days of…
Another day full of work and not enough time for art so I’m practicing my minimum and a micro win again.
Due to a long day at work I had to practice many micro wins today and settle for a very short art day.
Today, even though I don’t have as much time as I would like to work on art I’m struggling with communicating complex emotion in simple…
I’m a bit behind at work so I spent more time getting things done there today before getting the Indiana Jones Drawing started.
The next Fandom Fitness drawing took much time in research for images. I’m drawing Indiana Jones from The Last Crusade movie next.
Sundays have become a day of rest and recovery here. With this in mind I didn’t expend too much mental or physical energy on art…
In Robert Henri’s book The Art Spirit he speaks of the compositional relationship between both eyes and how in life there is always the dominant…
After taking the photos of Sherlock I noticed that the hair looks as if it was pasted flatly over the head. The head should fill…
As I struggle with the motive for this Sherlock drawing I tried spreading charcoal with a brush to see if I could depict more structure…
For my exercise yesterday I went on a long walk around the neighborhood and I had the pleasure of experiencing this amazing oasis in the…
Today’s art session was a bit rushed and after looking at the photos I realized that I deviated from my motive and got lost in…
I started a new Fandom Fitness drawing today and this one is of Benedict Cumberbatch from the awesome BBC series Sherlock.
I had planned to spend only a half hour on the Harry Potter Drawing this morning but I was so engrossed that I finished it.
Today I decided to take a short art morning and focus on catching up on piles of to-do’s that I need to get done.
I keep piling on more and more charcoal to the dark side of Harry Potter’s face to really push the transition of his whole head.
I’m trying hard to look at Harry Potter’s head, see the large masses and focus on the structure of his head so I can communicate…
With a day off work and a hike in the future I’m excited to get my at in early and to try a new exercise…
Today I started on the next Fandom Fitness drawing, Harry Potter. This one features a courageous and resolute Harry Potter facing his death.
With researching Harry Potter images, taking our cat to the vet, trying watercolors for the first time, doing some gestures and holding down my day…
Sunday morning and I’m taking it easy, just doing a few things I’ve committed to and finishing Spock.
Most of my decisions, while applying value on the Spock drawing, is whether to draw with, or against the form.
Spock needed more intricacy to describe the complexity of his face so today I began mixing charcoal and graphite into this drawing and it’s working…
Super full day of art! I started with a modeled painting in gouache, then gestures from memory, then a daily composition and finally some more…
Next up for Fandom Fitness is a drawing of Spock from Star Trek.
Today I put aside my normal Nicolaides exercise and Fandom Fitness drawing for a relaxing day of art.
I’m happy that I’m able to call this Captain Marvel drawing finished and as an added bonus I’m pleased with how it turned out.
The idea now is to make the gold star on Captain Marvel’s chest stand out. To do that I plan to use some high contrast.
After noticing that Captain Marvel’s body way too large I spent most of my time erasing and composing a new body for her.
After a quick critique from Pattie, we both agreed that I needed to add more to the Captain Marvel drawing which led me to lots…
I’m having a lot of uncertainty with the extreme contrast between detail and simplicity in this new Captain Marvel composition.
Another full day of art. Starting with memory gestures, then regular gestures and finishing with work on the captain marvel drawing.
I’m getting deep into the Captain Marvel drawing and I’m thinking I may be starting with too much detail.
After a few changes I’ve finished the Eleven drawing plus I started a new one of Captain Marvel.
I thought this Eleven drawing was done today but I got some wonderful feedback from Pattie, so I’m going to make some changes to it.
I have two new challenges today. The first is drawing printed text on Eggo waffle boxes and the other is daily composition drawings from memory.
After my nap I put aside all self consciousness and recorded a long overdue warm-up video for Jansen Art Center.
First I worked on a couple modeled drawings in ink than I moved to the second session of my Eleven Drawing.
I’m onto the next Fandom Fitness drawing today and I’m having fun with Eleven from stranger things.
I’m happy to announce that this Xena drawing is finished and I’m done with this character. Time to move onto the next one.
The Xena drawing is almost done. I would have finished it today but I’m not a tight schedule of creativity throughout my day.
Xena has such wonderful jet black hair and in order to go pure black with graphite I needed to really work my arm hard.
Instead of just drawing what I see in the photo I focused on drawing with motive today.
I’m back on track today and working on the same drawing of Xena I started from two days ago. I also got some great gestures…
Lots of challenges today with web stuff so my art time turned into a very short day.
Having more fun with another practice called “Group Poses” plus I started a new Xena drawing.
I’m trying hard to see structure in the photo of Xena I’ve been drawing from for the past couple days and it’s not going well.
I really dislike this latest Xena drawing. I’ve overworked it and killed any emotion or feeling in it.
I really enjoyed the reverse gestures exercise from The Natural Way to Draw this morning.
Instead of constantly getting discouraged I try to focus on the process not the outcome.
Drawing Xena and measuring before every stroke I realized the problem with drawing methods upon checking my progress.
Today I switched gears, picked a new image, and tried a more traditional approach to drawing Xena.
I was pushing myself to just let the drawing happen and it turned into a pretty bad drawing.
We need to have a deep willingness to do “bad” or “ugly” art when trying to see rather than copy.
While drawing gestures from memory today I had to accustom myself with really bad drawings and a stretch outside my comfort zone.
Just a few gestures today for my art making time, low energy, I’m having some sleep challenges at the moment.
With enough measuring anyone can copy from life, but using what is seen to communicate an authentic vision is the real purpose.
Due to the covid-19 crisis lots of artists are coming together, and I made a drawing materials video for the Jansen Art Center.
It’s going to be a short post today, I’m running a bit behind on my schedule, besides it’s a basic repeat of yesterday.
I would love t spend more time on Xena but I have to move on to some other art related fun stuff.
