Figure Drawing With Charcoal and Sanguine

Continuing with my inspiration from master drawing I’m attempting to do my own figure drawing with charcoal and sanguine, but from photo.

Here is one of the drawings that I have up next to my reference. This is by Robert Liberace who has a very old master feel to his drawings and paintings.

While drawing I have my reference photo on my iMac in front of me and in high resolution. Next to the reference photo I have the inspiration drawing and I’m analyzing the cross hatching used in it while trying to emulate the same on my drawing.

Unfortunately my drawing didn’t turn out quite as well and I realized that too much charcoal with the sanguine turns into quite a mess. I had to erase out most of the charcoal and keep the drawing predominantly in sanguine.
