Gandalf: Lots of Graphite

I’m working on the bottom half of Gandalf and the area is so dark that I have to put down a ton of graphite.

Working on a new exercise today in The Natural Way to Draw and it is really difficult for me. The exercise is called “Weight” and the purpose is to try and feel the models weight while building up the charcoal much the same as a sculptor would.

The hard part is that it’s scheduled so that one drawing takes 30 minutes and I find myself filling the whole space with no idea of where to go next in about 7 minutes.

I’ll say it again, even though this is hard, I’m loving the book because it’s getting me out of my comfort zone in drawing and pushing my ability to think in different ways.

What went well?

Drawing early in the morning is wonderful!

What didn’t go so well?

Tape marks in Gandalf drawing and unable to do the weight exercise for as long as directed.

What did I learn and/or how can I do better?

The weight exercise is really difficult but I feel it will expand my mental representations.

Next time plan my drawings so they fit on the page or get larger paper.
