Kneadable Eraser as a Maquette

In order to help me visualize how light would fall on an imaginative form I had a brilliant realization that I could use my kneadable eraser as a maquette.

Actually for the last few sessions on this drawing I was thinking about James Gurney and how he creates maquettes to help bring his imaginative world to life. But, I don’t have that kind of time for this drawing.

Then it dawned on me today that for each form, like the beak of the bird on the left. I could quickly mold my kneadable eraser into a close approximation of that form and light it to see how the light falls on it.

Here is James Gurney using a maquette in his book Imaginative Realism.

I can’t wait to review this book in one of my Artists Perspectives it’s full of amazing ideas that I can use for future projects.

I also just want to show off my signed copy with a drawing a dinosaur by James Gurney! So awesome!

The challenges continue with the 250 box challenge. A pretty good page today. I could have marked more errors but I think there small enough to let pass.

One Minute Gestures

Still the most prominent and most fun from Nicolaides book is the one minute gestures. I love when I get into the zone and the drawings just flow from my brain. I was deep into it on page 4 and 5.

Daily Composition and Sketch

I was getting tired of drawing my fresh press horribly so I focused on it longer by starting it in pencil with simple shapes.

The composition today is of a couple paddle boarders on the bay close to our house and the Canadian coast in the background.

What went well, what was awesome! Celebrate It!

A short art session today but the discovery of using my kneadable eraser as a maquette is going to be a game changer for visualizing forms in the future.

What needs work? What did you learn?

Don’t yell at WordPress when the page freezes and I loose half my post. 🙂

How am I going to Optimize moving forward?

Use my kneadable eraser more often to improve my mental representations of forms and save my WordPress draft more often.

  1. That’s really an ingenious and resourceful art-hack you showed with the eraser. I’ll make a zookeeper out of you, yet 😉
That really does remind me of how resourceful I used to be when trying to save money and resources and the environment. Awesome job with that (the Spearow (?) looks great).
