Life Drawing Alone

I don’t mind life drawing alone but I think I may change the name to cyber drawing alone or something, it lacks all the life of an actual model. Even though, it’s still good practice and I’d rather be doing something that forces me to look, think, and articulate.

I used to turn my nose up at drawing or painting from photograph but if I did that now I would be drastically limiting my possibilities. I’m still able to train my eye and hand to respond to the shapes in a photo very similar to drawing from life, it’s just much easier. I don’t have to make that transition from 3 dimensions to 2. I guess at this point I would suggest to every artist that they work from life and photos. Each one has it’s challenges and in this digital age no matter what you do you will have to deal with both.

Still focusing on the details too soon.

These 5 minute poses are probably the most important. I feel like if I can get the action of the gesture and general proportions down in this time that the rest is easy.

Poses seam to always go better when I don’t have to deal with the face, which means I need to draw small heads more often. There is really no shortage of things I can do daily for art.

More about value here than line, but I haven’t used up all my rough newsprint yet, so the shading is really coarse.

I worked most of my time on the hands, I really wanted to get these correct.

All about form here. I was thinking constantly about the shape of the torso and breasts in space and how to make it happen.

  1. This post just made me think of something. With this digital age, would it be possible to do a “live” figure drawing through live-streaming video? Say, Skype, or video chatting? Or is that a little too much like porn?

  2. There is actually a YouTube channel that does live posing, the poses are tasteful and it’s nice but I don’t think it’s much better than drawing from photos. Although, most of the photos I draw from have too many difficult poses that a model could not hold for 5 minutes or more. The one thing that is nice about a live pose session video is that you are forced to deal with the settling of the model, or their slight movements during the pose.
