Lost In Copying

Today’s art session was a bit rushed and after looking at the photos I realized that I deviated from my motive and got lost in copying.

The motive for this drawing is to depict the unsympathetic, pompous and egotistical attitude of Sherlock Holmes depicted in this TV show.

How do I communicate this within a drawing?

First I tried to pick an image of the actor that had some or all of those qualities communicated in the expression. Now as I work in charcoal laying in the structure of his head and placement of the features I keep thinking about what an unsympathetic, pompous or egotistical line looks like.

I haven’t come up with it yet, but I’m working on it…

The one thing I do know is that the current rendering of it is not communicating that. It’s just me getting lost in copying. Next session I will try and fix it.

“A work of art is not a copy of things. It is inspired by nature but must not be a copying of the surface. Therefore what is commonly called “finish” may not be finish at all.”

Today’s Gestures

After about 7 to 10 gestures I begin to get the hang of defining an impulse and trying to communicate that. But the first few are just me getting warmed up even though I’ve already done a warm-up.

Special Thanks to Joshua Graphic

I just wanted give a special thanks to Joshua over at JoshuaGraphic.com for an amazing zoom call today. Daily Composition

Yesterday our workout session was us walking around time picking up litter. We do this about once a month to help out not only the look of our neighborhood but to help the environment also.

Plus we build exercise into the activity. I do a full squat for ever piece of trash I pick up. We also pick a single type of trash and whenever we pick up that type we do 10 of that exercise.

Cleaner environment, better looking neighborhood and healthier us, it’s an amazing activity packed with awesome!

Most people don’t know but cigarette butts make up around 30% of all litter and they are the most toxic.

Here is Pattie demonstrating a single leg forward fold to pick up cigarette butts.

What went well?

Tons of energy today because of great sleep!

What didn’t go so well?

Pressed for time because I packed my day with goodness.

What did I learn and/or how can I do better?

Dan Thompson is an amazing artist and I’m super influenced by his work. Plus I love Studio Incamminati where he teaches at. But I’m not Dan so I shouldn’t try and reproduce his work and focus on what I want to communicate. Oh, and I need to not get lost in copying.

  1. I just want to appreciate you drawing me to look WAY fitter than I actually am. And for not doing “frazzled hair”.
