New Pencil Sharpener

Another shorter art session today but I got to play with a new pencil sharpener from Kum that works wonderfully.

I was having issues sharpening the Monolith Pencils that I purchased weeks ago. I love these pencils but the sharpener they came with, also made by Kum, dulled rather quickly. This is the typical pencil sharpener that brings the pencil to a point but without much taper.

To try and fix this I purchased the Kum Masterpiece sharpener. This thing is awesome! You use one blade to create a long taper on the pencil and the other to sharpen the point. Not only was I able to get the Monolith pencils to a long taper easily but I was also able to do the same with the Conte a Paris 1710 pencils.

The top Monolith pencil has a much larger taper than the one below.

The only drawback is that you need to remove the plastic coating on the Monolith pencils first and the wood on the Conte a Paris for it to work smoothly. This is not a big deal as it also allows me to collect the graphite and charcoal powder in separate containers for later use without any wood or plastic shavings in it.

It was a breeze using the new pencil sharpener while working on the Pokemon drawing. I didn’t have much time to work on it today but it was nice to keep my pencils very sharp quickly without much interruption.

Two Minute Group Gestures

I love how Nicolaides’ book is always switching up the exercises and revisiting ones that I’ve done before. This is the two minute group gestures exercise where I do a search on stock photo sites to find groups of people to draw. Awesome practice for my daily compositions.

Daily Composition and Sketch

A stack of weights in our living room / gym and a couple of kids in an inflatable pull having a great time splashing around. I was a bit rushed on both of these unfortunately.

What went well, what was awesome! Celebrate It!

A full day of art practice and some performance but I’m very happy with my new pencil sharpener.

What needs work? What did you learn?

I’m still working on getting my sleep back in order but I didn’t let it get me down today. I powered through with a positive attitude and had a wonderful day.

How am I going to Optimize moving forward?

Continue to keep a positive attitude regardless of my daily sleep score. Say “needs work” and focus on the process.

  1. I love how excited you are about a new pencil sharpener. But I also appreciate you explaining why something as simple as a pencil sharpener can bring great joy and help you out in profound ways. It’s like the micro-win, or small actions that make a huge impact.
