The current state of the painting is in a really weird position but I assure you it is for a good reason.
I keep starting this over because it is important to get the white of the canvas to show through these beginning layers and keep all of the acrylic layers as transparent and bright as I possibly can. Of course I didn’t know this until after yesterdays work. But we learn, and that is great.
When I start painting on it again I’m going to keep it super light and bright the whole time and ignore the darker colors. Basically I will bump up all the values over the whole area while at the same time keep some interest in the layers. I want action under the skin, when I’m done with all the layers and the oil paint at the end I want it to glow yet seem like there is life and energy emanating from beneath his skin.
