Mount Rainier painting

Mount Rainier painting for the first time ever. One day I will travel to the mountain and get some closer views.

This will mark the very first time I have ever painting Mount Rainier. I had to really zoom in here to get a nice view of the mountain though. But this really made for an easy painting. Most of my focus was just getting the values and colors correct. The park itself was huge, and even though it had some good possibilities for subject I couldn’t find any good places to setup. I’m not sure if I will return to this park.

I think I even drew the mountain a bit larger so that It would look a bit bigger in the painting. Also as I look at these paintings I really notice how thin I’m painting, I wonder if I should use bristle brushes more, throughout the painting.

I had to really zoom in on this subject.

My hierarchy of painting importance

  1. Drawing
  2. Value
  3. Edges
  4. Composition
  5. Color

Value

How can I improve the values?

I think I got the values on the mountain correct in their relative nature but the values for the land mass and water are way to low. I haven’t had any experience with atmospheric perspective so it makes sense that I’m not doing well on it just yet. All the trees are much too small here also, you can tell I was just flubbing in the land mass and not really focusing on drawing or placement.
