Seeing the Simple Shapes

For the Pokemon drawing I focused on seeing the simple shapes that made up the Aerodactyl. Then shading the Pokemon to match the light source.

The shading I started yesterday was based on the cartoon image that I found of the Aerodactyl but I really didn’t like that none of the shadows really matched a central light source. For today I decided to ignore most of the shadows in the cartoon and figure out how the light would fall on the forms myself. I think this approach looks better plus it’s improving my mental representation of space.

Warm-up and DrawABox exercises

The normal 15 minute warm-up in graphite.

The challenges continue with the 250 box challenge. Same as yesterday, not too bad, but I’m lacking the dexterity to control free handed lines.

Memory Gestures

The more I practice these gestures the more success I have with them, although the improvement is very slight. Many of the gestures don’t look great but I feel that every single one is describing the figure simply. I owe this to my increased ability in seeing the simple shapes that make up any figure.

Daily Composition and Sketch

I loath my printer. I’ve hated it for over 10 years now but I drew it with a smile knowing that within a week I will be replacing it. I’m getting a new printer that is going to be much better for the environment.

My daily composition is of my landlord feeding the birds bread. Please, if you’re reading this, NEVER feed the birds bread and is most places never feed them at all. Let them be birds, they don’t need you to take care of them. Not only is human food bad for most animals but your giving them a dependence on you that may kill them when you move as they have lost the ability to fend for themselves. And in most cases it will cause issues with their wings that will keep them from flying ever again.

What went well, what was awesome! Celebrate It!

A great day of art and I feel like I’m making some progress on the Pokemon drawing.

What needs work? What did you learn?

Don’t get to frustrated with the time I have during the day.

How am I going to Optimize moving forward?

If I don’t get everything done then I need to just be okay with that.

  1. Thanks for sharing that tip about feeding birds. It is so frustrating and I keep struggling to come up with non-confrontational, radiant exemplar ways to show people a better way. Putting it in a post is a great idea.
