Transplant Anniversary

Today is the two year anniversary of my kidney transplant! Today I’m celebrating my amazing friend and her astonishing gift with a day off work and a hike in the mountains.

Because of today’s festivities and an appointment to get labs done, I had to cut my morning art routine a little short. But I was able to get a little done on all of my commitments.

Sheldon is coming along nicely. I’m still refining the drawing and getting the head and features placed right then I will begin adding charcoal and focusing on what I want to communicate.

Warm-up and DrawABox exercises

The normal 15 minute warm-up in graphite.

The challenges continue with the 250 box challenge. I started adding a ā€œDā€ next to some of the boxes where the initial lines were misplaced giving the box a distorted look.

Back to the Model

This was a fun exercise and one that you have to protect your neck with. You sit with your back to the model, or photo, and have to look over your shoulder to see what to draw.

After trying to look over my shoulder every few seconds I quickly started to force myself to see as much as I could with each look. Swinging my head back and forth was making me dizzy.

Daily Composition and Daily Sketch

A sketch of part of my book shelf and a composition of my kiddie again. After searching my memory of yesterday I realized that besides Pattie we didn’t have any contact with anyone, not even from afar.

What went well?

I love my art mornings and I’m super happy to be in such great health on my two year kidney transplant anniversary.

What needs work?

More focus on drawing boxes.

What did I learn?

The back to the model exercise is great if I need to break myself from copying and forcing myself to focus on the big masses before the details.

  1. The “back to the model” exercise sounds like a great challenge to strengthen your memory of your subject (so you don’t have to turn so often, I’m assuming). Either that or give your neck a powerful workout.
Congrats on your anniversary. It was a great day to celebrate life and all the gifts that it has given us.
