Figure drawing in graphite today and I focused on deliberate practice as outlined in the book Peak by Anders Ericsson.

The first sketch of the day was just to warmup and I took some notes for a while thinking about what I wanted to accomplish for the life drawing session.

Basically I liked how the model was full of round organic shapes and her surroundings were all geometric so I tried to push that idea while not worrying about getting super detailed or accurate.

What went well?

I was able to practice the 5 steps of Deliberate practice.

  1. Clear training program
  2. Steps to take for each session or group of sessions
  3. Tackle something outside my current ability
  4. Intense focus during practice
  5. Immediate feedback after and how to improve

What didn’t go so well?

I would like the figure to be more accurate and I want to find a way to render value without so much rubbing.

What did I learn and/or how can I do better?

I need to constantly do this practice. I should create a little poster on my easel that has the steps.
