Xena: Back on Track

I’m back on track today and working on the same drawing of Xena I started from two days ago. I also got some great gestures done today.

Today’s gestures from The Natural Way to Draw were some of the best I’ve done in a while. Now, when I say that I don’t mean that they look good. I’m mean that they captured the expression of the figure that I wanted to communicate. I feel this is much harder than just making them representative of the figure I was looking at.

I was also able to work on the Xena drawing a big and get back on track with production for all things fandom fitness related.

I’ve changed the way I’m doing these drawings a bit. I’m using the photograph much more than I would like in order to get the proportions accurate. Then I’m trying to work the drawing from that point into some that closer represents me as an artist and is not just a copy of a photograph.

Basically, I’m going to be experimenting a bit but not as much as I was a few drawings past.

What went well?

Great gesture drawings done today.

What didn’t go so well?

Struggling to express my authentic self. I’m not sure who that is right now.

What did I learn and/or how can I do better?

I feel like a more natural approach to shading with line rather than with all kinds of overly smothed out gradations of graphite is more who I am.
